Thinking of Remodeling Your Kitchen? Here Are Five Popular Kitchen Remodeling Trends in 2019

For some of us, it’s hard to believe avocado-hued appliances were once en vogue. In the same way, today’s homeowner clamors for smudge-resistant stainless steel, these garishly green dinosaurs were all the rage in the 1970s. But like other trends of that decade, bright and brash appliances faded into oblivion as time marched on and tastes became more muted.

For years, real estate agents and designers have sworn by the adage that kitchens and baths are what sells homes, leading would-be sellers to dazzle up space in hopes for a quick sale. But what about the homeowner who isn’t looking to pack up and move? Or even those who are buying a new home with an outdated kitchen? Why should they be excluded from all the fun of a full-blown kitchen reno?

If you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen, we can help. Whether you’re coming, going, or staying put, here are five of the most popular trends in kitchen remodeling for 2019.

1. Black is the new white

OK, you don’t have to go black, but the all-white everything kitchen craze is on its way out. This year, we’re seeing homeowners go dark with cabinets, floors, countertops, backsplashes and even appliances to set a moody and mysterious tone. While the darker shades give off an elegant vibe, they also provide some functionality since they’re easier to keep clean—a huge perk for families with kids. Some of our favorite kitchens right now are dramatic spaces spruced up with dark grays, greens and even blues.

2. Open up

Even if you don’t have fine china, that doesn’t mean you don’t have sentimental dishes or antiques to display. Many of today’s homeowners are opting to replace those clunky upper cabinets with open shelving that lets in more light and makes a bold statement. Wood, glass and even metal seem to be the most popular picks for these showstopping pieces that make your kitchen feel more spacious. Bonus: It’s a lot easier to find something when you don’t have to hunt for it.

3. Get smart.

At this point, automation likely already has a place in certain areas of your home (just ask Alexa), but smart applications in the kitchen are starting to hit their stride. Refrigerators equipped with smart-screen displays, Bluetooth-enabled lighting packages that double as wireless speakers, hidden charging stations and coffee makers that are programmable via smartphone app are just a few examples of how technology is revolutionizing how and why we do what we do in the kitchen.

4. Finally including the kitchen sink.

sink

“Everything but the kitchen sink” is now a thing of the past, and it’s the basin’s time to shine. The drab and bland front aprons on everyone’s favorite farmhouse-style sinks are going gold. And champagne. And cobalt blue. And black. In addition, homeowners looking for a funky departure from the traditional stainless steel or porcelain sink are turning to stunning selections in copper that offer up loads of classic charm. One of the more practical sink trends in 2019 is more about hiding it, than showing it off. Partitions which can slide over the sink itself can now be fully integrated, adding extra prep space and proving once again that a kitchen can be small on size, but big on style.

5. Free your mind (and your kitchen).

This next one is easier said than done, but it might just be the most impactful: declutter. It’s all about clean lines and a clutter-free space in 2019, so find somewhere else to drop your bag, the last few days of mail, your keys, yesterday’s dry cleaning—you get the point. When it comes to stuff, less is more. Forget that double oven. Two dishwashers? Don’t need ‘em both. Homeowners are even downplaying backsplashes, cabinet hardware and pendant lights all for the sake of minimalism. Counter-level “garages” are clutch for hiding small appliances, while some homeowners are even moving microwaves under the counter to top off the look. Out of sight, out of mind.

If a kitchen is the heart of the home, it only makes sense that you show yours a little love. By incorporating these five trends, you’re bound to renovate your kitchen into the perfect space that’s fit to grace the pages of your favorite décor magazine—or to feed your family of five.
