What Florida City Should You Move To After College?

So you’ve finished up your academic career and you’ve decided to settle down in the sunshine state. No wonder, considering all the benefits of living in Florida. There is no state income tax, housing costs are lower than many other parts of the country, the access to world class beaches, residents receive discounts to acclaimed local attractions, and the weather is warm all year round.

It’s a great place to call home, but now you have to decide where exactly you should put down roots. Here’s a helpful guide if you’re wondering what Florida city you should move to after college.

Miami

miami

Yes, the large metropolitan area of Miami has its touristy and nightlife aspects, but it’s also filled with culture, entertainment, and employment opportunities. The estimated median house value in the area is about $277,700, with a median gross rent of $1,063. If you’re looking for a good balance between work and play, Miami is the right fit for you.

Jacksonville

jacksonville

The picturesque city of Jacksonville not only has beaches and great weather, it boasts a low average monthly rent of $980. Home prices are equally as affordable, the median value of a home is about $157,800. It’s a smooth transition from school life to the college-town charm this laid-back city is proud of. It is also the most populated city in the state, meaning it’s easy to meet new people. There are many suburbs in Jacksonville that young professionals love and the job market is booming. Many big name companies are expanding operations within the city, including Amazon and Wayfair.

Fort Lauderdale

fort lauderdale

More and more growing families and young professionals are moving to Fort Lauderdale due to the family-oriented nature of the place and because the job market in the area is thriving. Houses are priced at around $325,000, and the median gross rent is $1,213. If you’re into boating, you can choose to live on the water in one of the many waterways.

Orlando

orlando

Located in Central Florida, the city of Orlando has a median home value of $244,600, with monthly rent prices usually coming in at $1,114. It’s a touristy destination, but if you’re a fan of the local attractions you’ll be happy to know that residents receive discounted tickets. And it’s location within the state means you can see a lot of Florida without having to travel too far.

Tallahassee

Tallahassee

Tallahassee offers residents a college-town feel, with lots of nightlife and football, it’s more lively than the beach towns found around Florida. The city’s downtown area is rapidly growing and evolving into a hip place for recent graduates to call home. House prices are on average about $196,700, and rent is around $959 per month.

St. Petersburg
